Higher Education

An impressive number of students proceed to Higher Education after their Sixth Form course and students regularly gain places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Over 40% of pupils were offered places to study at Russell Group Universities in 2014. A well-developed careers programme is offered including a Higher Education Day, Handbook for Parents, visit to the UCAS Fair, open day events and summer school. Key activities are provided to support pupils in preparation for their UCAS applications. Special groups are run to support Oxbridge candidates and also those applying for law, medicine and veterinary science. For those students applying for Art College, considerable support is given in producing a substantial portfolio of work.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are an exciting new development which offers students the opportunity to develop their career while both working and learning. The dedicated Sixth Form Careers Advisor is able to link you with National Corporations and Businesses in pursuit of apprenticeships.

Careers Office and Library

A wide range of resources are available in the Careers Office and Library including: university/college prospectuses; information on gap year activities; student finance; work shadowing; conferences; and working and studying abroad. Students are encouraged to consider the options open to them early in Year 12 and to research courses and higher education institutions together with their Tutor, Head of Year, Careers Advisor and support from their parent or guardian.

UCAS University Application

In the summer term of Year 12, the formal process of university application through UCAS begins and students receive ongoing guidance on completing their online UCAS application and writing personal statements. University open days are advertised in the Sixth Form Study Centre and Careers Room.

Students are encouraged to visit universities they are seriously considering applying to, and are allowed up to three days leave from school to attend Open Days.

In Year 13, individual support is available to help students to select their first choice and insurance university offers and to prepare for student life. There are also talks on practical aspects of living away from home, such as managing finances and budgeting, personal safety and fresher’s week.
